In 1966, the Kingdom of Lesotho gained its independence from the U.K. After two decades, Lesotho fell into political turmoil that included military mutiny, the king’s exile and return, military mutiny, and a disputed election that resulted in international intervention by South Africa and Botswana. Some stability was restored after reforms took place. However, today the threat of instability looms. In addition, Lesotho suffers from declining food production which has resulted in serious hunger conditions. Around 42% of children under the age of 5 suffer from stunting. Lesotho is home to 180,000 orphans. About 450,000 people who will need humanitarian assistance before next harvest. For generations the people of Lesotho have been predominantly Christian. This tradition however has created a complacency in the church.
